Of the existing legalized states, Nevada’s model is the standard for full service race and sportsbooks and the regulatory oversight of their operations. The gaming board establishes regulations & standards for race & sportsbook software solutions which require prior approval before deployment to licensee operating environments. Stadium Technology Group’s Nevada approved software product, PrimeLine Enterprise Edition (PLEE), is a comprehensive accounting and risk management platform that manages race and sportsbooks. Rich Baccellieri, Race and Sports Industry Expert of Stadium Technology Group, comments about Stadium’s ability to improve the sports-betting business management. Starting with a single customer back in 2009, today the company has evolved to implementation of 17 sportsbook operator host systems—from a total of 21 currently in the state of Nevada and the software choice of the Delaware jurisdiction. PLEE is a highly scalable and robust software that offers an intuitive user interface, supports retail point of sale & kiosk devices, a mobile application and a browser-based web application. PLEE provides a suite of reports that support analytics and accounting and the option for creation of custom reports either by Stadium or client’s internal teams. PLEE also affords third-party system integration for CMS and other casino management systems. A common requirement of clients’ as part of the Stadium system installation is the real-time integration of the race & sports system with player tracking/ rewards system provider. The CRM solution extracts the player data upon submission of the wager and transmits transaction details to the respective casino management system(s). Recently added features are performance of responsible gaming checks and AML/ Title 31 reporting system integrations.

"Stadium’s rapid growth over the last eight years, is a testament to the competency of its industry experienced development team and superior system performance"

With multiple users accessing the system, the system ensures security and accountability, by mapping each class of users with applicable rights depending on their role-based permissions. Guy Ossello, the founder and CEO of Stadium emphasizes on the complexity involved in creating this holistic solution, with multiple validations to be performed even before a wager is taken while efficiently and accurately completed within milliseconds. Stadium takes pride in building and maintaining high quality customer relationships. “We are in tune with our customers’ challenges & opportunities and strive to evaluate and accommodate their requests in a timely manner. This presents additional challenges where software modifications are required due to highly regulated environment. Additionally, we continue to provide new product offerings” adds Ossello. The latest new product to market is Stadium Live, a managed in game wagering module that produces primary & secondary wagering markets during the course on a sporting event. “Stadium’s rapid growth over the last eight years, is a testament to the competency of its industry experienced development team and superior system performance.”

CIOReview|32| December 2017

Stadium Technology Launches Stadium Live

Stadium Technology Launches Stadium LiveStadium Live offers live in game wagering on all major sporting events.Las Vegas—Stadium Technology Group (Stadium), Nevada’s leading NGCB approved Race and Sports Management software provider, announces the release of “Stadium Live,” the latest extension to Stadium’s existing book & risk management platform, PrimeLine Enterprise Edition. Courtesy of Horsephotos

If you step off the elevator on the wrong floor in a Las Vegas casino only to see a man holding a lucky rodent skull, three women in cleavage-baring horse-jockey outfits and hundreds of frothing men screaming themselves hoarse, end times might seem nigh. But if you handicap horse races – the art of figuring out which horse is likely to run the fastest in a given race – this is Shangri-La. Welcome to the National Handicapping Championship, billed as "the richest, most important and most prestigious tournament for horseplayers in the world."

Every year since 2000, a motley band of character actors, backroom politicians, ballerinas, coastal-elite corporate execs (inc luding the former president of Vince McMahon's failed football league, the XFL), opera-house employees and run-of-the-mill railbird gamblers (at least that's who I met) descend upon Las Vegas to compete in the annual event. In late January, I traveled to Sin City to experience the adrenaline rush of being in a ballroom with hundreds of horseplayers gunning for an $800,000 first-place prize, and to try and learn the tricks of the handicapping trade and make a little money while gorging myself on the complimentary cold cuts.

The NHC goes down at Treasure Island, a pirate-themed resort in the shadow of the gold-encrusted Trump Hotel on the northern end of the Strip. The competitors gather in two ballrooms on the hotel's second floor. Eighteen massive screens adorn the larger ballroom's walls and broadcast live horse races from across the country. Players place fictional bets in real races in a row of machines that resemble voting machines in a polling place. The races that the players bet on take place at eight tracks, from Gulfstream Park in Florida's Broward County to Golden Gate Fields near Berkeley. And there's a cash bar to fuel the action.

When a race occurs, the competitors rise to their feet and scream at the screens, some of them smacking their thighs with rolled up copies of the Daily Racing Form in an effort to prod on their horses. It feels like being on the floor of a stock exchange during a market crash, or if everyone in a Price Is Right studio audience each drank a pot of coffee. It's the horse racing Hunger Games, but instead of Katniss Everdeen everyone looks like your wayward uncle who enjoys playing the ponies.

While the casino one floor below teems with chain-smoking slot machine players, drunken bachelorette parties, sex workers and frat boys, the NHC players aren't in Vegas to party; they're on a mission to win big. Dan Kovalesky, a 33-year-old NHC competitor from Scottsdale, Arizona, says, "Last night, I just did my homework on today's races in my hotel room while watching Titanic on TV. Nothing scandalous." But not every competitor is as squeaky-clean as Kovalesky. Treasure Island gives every participant in the tournament a complimentary room. "It's hundreds of degenerate gamblers," a hotel employee (who asked not to be named) says. "Of course we want them in the casino."

The straightforward rules of the NHC are deceptively simple. Competitors are given a fictional bankroll of $144. Over the course of the tournament's first two days, players place $2 bets on horses to win and place (or, to finish first and second). The races are real, but the money wagered is phony. On the NHC's final day, the field of 627 entries is whittled down to 66 and then trimmed down once more to a final table of 10.

On the tournament's second day, I traverse the ballroom floor and badger competitors for tips on how to become a master horseplayer. My plan was to take their advice, run down to the sportsbook on the casino's main floor, and place real bets on the races they were playing. The players sit at circular tables in the ballroom, guzzling coffee and Diet Coke, with data-filled spreadsheets open on laptops and annotated Daily Racing Forms splayed out in front of them. In between races, with the horse players crunching numbers, it looks nothing like a Vegas bacchanalia. It's more like a Silicon Valley hackathon or a deleted scene from Moneyball.

Linda Rodriguez, a three-time NHC competitor from San Diego, and former dancer with the California Ballet Company, offers a suggestion on how to choose a winning horse. "Horse racing is like ballet in that it's performative," she says. "The workouts are like rehearsals, the race is the performance. I handicap more on physicality than numbers. I try to tell by a horse's musculature, how it moves, how it performs."

Dennis Johnson, a 46-year-old handicapper from Plainsfield, Illinois, relies on a lucky talisman to help with his picks. "When I was 18 I was walking home from the track and I found this rodent skull," he says, displaying a two-inch-long cranium with massive fangs. "Could be a squirrel, could be a raccoon, I'm not sure. But I took it to a friend's house and I just started winning everyone's money. Dice, poker, blackjack; I couldn't lose. I haven't used the skull for years but I brought it to Wrigley Field in October. The Cubs needed all the help they could get, and it worked. Now I'm at Treasure Island. They've got a giant skull outside the hotel. I wanna say this was meant to be, but I don't count my skulls before they hatch."

Horse racing's popularity received a brief jolt with American Pharoah's 2015 Triple Crown win, the sport's first since 1978, but has been on the decline overall. Handicapping horse races might seem like a fading pastime, like baseball scorekeeping or ham radio, but if the NHC is any indicator, its popularity is surging. At the first NHC in 2000, 160 players competed for $192,000 in prize money. This year, 654 entries competed for $2.9 million on the line. Much like with poker, the handicapping action today is online, especially with the next generation of horseplayers.

"I mostly compete in online handicapping tournaments," says Alex DeVito, a 25-year-old competitor in a salmon-colored Vineyard Vines hoodie. DeVito is the youngest player in this year's NHC. "I definitely don't care about going to the track, but I like handicapping," he says. "Online tournaments are great because they're not played with real money. I don't need to risk my bankroll."

DeVito's father, Basil DeVito, 62 and also competing, politely interrupts. "We're going to have to make this quick," he says to me. "Alex is currently in 60th place and the cutoff is 66. We've got two races to go to get Alex over the hump." The senior DeVito, who is an executive at WWE (and the former president of the XFL), brushes off the idea that there are any similarities between horse racing and professional wrestling. "The only thing handicapping and pro wrestling have in common is intensity," he says.

To qualify for a spot in the NHC, handicappers have to win tournaments at tracks across the country, or online. It's no easy feat. Joe Scanio, a 53-year-old Brooklyn-based actor wearing a burgundy cable-knit sweater who once played a guest at the wedding of Johnny Sack's daughter on The Sopranos compared the competition to landing a big role.

"You face so much rejection in the audition process as an actor," Scanio says, "and you take a lot of losses as a horse handicapper. There are hundreds of qualified actors going for parts and there are hundreds of qualified handicappers trying to win this weekend. That said, out of the 600 handicappers here, 200 of them have zero chance. They're first-timers, total amateurs. I could teach a lot of these guys how to get an edge, but I'm not about to hang a sign that says, 'Come here to learn how to win.'"

As the NHC progresses, I continue to pump the horseplayers for winning tips. Tony Brice, a 60-year-old country music songwriter who wrote "I Don't Drink About You Anymore" by 3 Ring Rodeo, says, "Creativity is key. The numbers are fuel for the imagination. It's about looking at the numbers from past races and using them to imagine future races." Stephen Diaz, 61, the master carpenter for New York City's Metropolitan Opera, says, "The key to winning the NHC is knowing who to stay next to and who to stay away from. There are a lot of loud personalities here who can distract your focus."

Bryan Wagner, 73, disagrees with Diaz's sentiment. Wagner, who holds court like a John Grisham character, has competed in almost every NHC. His claim to fame is that, due to complicated line-of-succession politics, he was mayor of New Orleans for one day on three separate occasions between 1981 and 1987. "Go to poker tournaments," Wagner says, "and you'll find that people dislike each other. Here in the horse racing community, there's an incredible camaraderie. There's a lot of hollering, but I'm hollering for my friends to win as much as I am for myself."

As the NHC's second day winds down, Dan Kovalesky, the jovial Titanic-watching sales rep from Scottsdale, sits near the top of the leaderboard. He wears a red windbreaker and a giant grin as his opponents in the tournament stop by his table to shake his hand and deliver congratulatory backslaps. "Horse racing can seem intimidating as hell to get into," he says. "Most people have parents or an aunt or uncle who introduce them to the sport. I got into it in college because my local track had a dollar beer night." (The next day, the $800,000 first-place prize would go to Ray Arsenault, a 64-year-old Canadian. Kovalesky would win the $75,000 fifth-place prize.)

As I pester Kovalesky for handicapping tips ("Do your homework and listen to "At the Races," Steve Byk's daily Sirius show'" he offers) I watch the screens to see the last race of the day, at Santa Anita, a track east of Los Angeles. The room erupts with desperate screams (most of them men – only 24 women competed in this year's NHC) as a horse named Bird Is the Word upsets Panama Papers. High-fives are exchanged between winners, and men rubbing their temples in agony are easily identified as the losers. I place myself in the latter category, having lost all eight races I bet on that day. Despite all the winning advice I received, there's no such thing as easy money.

*Original article can be found at http://www.rollingstone.com/sports/inside-horse-racings-hunger-games-in-las-vegas-w466940

Super Bowl Sunday in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS – Super Bowl Sunday here is all about lines, the ones you stand in to give the casinos your money and the ones that determine whether you get any of it back.It starts early and ends late, and anything can happen, especially if you cross the lines.4 a.m.: Some 11 hours before kickoff of Super Bowl LI, bettors formed a line at the shiny, red 24-hour sportsbook inside the Venetian. The two ticket writers took their money, mostly small bets on the hundreds of proposition bets. Some of folks were up early to beat game-day lines; others had not gone to sleep yet. The book won’t take bets from anyone completely plowed, but that’s tough judgment call at this point.

8 a.m.: Several dozen bettors are standing in line at the sportsbook at the MGM Grand, including one gentleman in a t-shirt with the sleeves cut off and a stocking hat. He’s ready for all weather conditions.

9 a.m.: A few miles down the Strip from the MGM, just outside the Mirage, the Budweiser Clydesdales are lined up, enjoying beautiful February weather, with temperatures in 60s and plenty of sunshine. Inside the Mirage, vice president of race and sports Jay Rood has not arrived yet for work.

9:30 a.m.: The line at the Venetian remains a dozen or so deep.

10 a.m.: Rood has arrived just in time to see the over/under on the Super Bowl start to plummet. Influential bettors have decided 59 is too high and take aim at every book in town. By the time they’re done, the highest total in Super Bowl history is no longer that. It is bet down to as low as 56.5.

10:30 a.m.: The biggest bet Rood says he’s taken on the Super Bowl is $485,000 on the Patriots.

11 a.m.: The line at the Wynn stretches down the wall under the odds board and to just outside of the book. A seat at the adjacent bar requires a $75 minimum drink purchase per person.

11:30 a.m.: The line at the sportsbook at the Aliante Hotel & Casino Is 50-deep, stretching to back of the book.

12:30 p.m.: The Guardian Angel Cathedral sits just off of Las Vegas Boulevard, a half a half-block north of the Encore hotel. Attendance for mass on Super Bowl Sunday is lighter than normal, much lighter than the overflow crowds that attend masses when big boxing matches are in town.

Some in attendance this Sunday are sporting football jerseys. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s No. 12 is there. Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott’s No 21 is represented, and even a retro Los Angeles Rams jersey of Eric Dickerson’s No. 29. No Atlanta Falcons jerseys were spotted.

Often, tickets of winning sports bets are left quietly in the offering plate, which on this Sunday is a dark brown, leather basket.

As the service concludes, Father Tom Montelaro greets people on their way out the door. A man in an Oakland Raiders jersey jokes that he hopes Father Montelaro will pray for the team to find a home in Las Vegas, as he heads out the door.

2:30 p.m.: The line to bet at the Westgate SuperBook is hundreds deep, stretching from out front of the counter all the way down the wall underneath the giant oddsboard and wrapping around behind the bar.

Standing alongside the wall is Richie Baccellieri, a longtime Las Vegas bookmaker who some might know as the Pencil. Next to Baccellieri is iconic Vegas oddsmaker Roxy Roxborough, who, per usual, is dressed to the nines in a tailored suit, complete with his name stitched on his shirt cuff. Roxborough just stopped in looking for a price on a horse, before heading home for his wife’s guacamole.

Baccellieri is now an executive for Stadium Technology, which provides modern bookmaking software to the majority of sports book operators around town, including at the Westgate. He heads back into the office of the SuperBook, where his clients sportsbook managers Ed Salmons, Jeff Sherman and Randy Blum are glued to the computer screen, watching thousands of dollars roll in on everything from the Super Bowl point spread to the coin flip.

“Rich was the king,” Salmons says. “I remember when I first started as a teller, you’d go to Richie’s place at Caesars, it was like the greatest place in town.”

Baccellieri, a 52-year-old from the Bronx, spent 25 years behind the counter at various Las Vegas sportsbooks, including stops at MGM, Caesars Palace and the Palms. He took that experience and teamed up with a software expert to develop Stadium Technology’s product. But he misses the action at the sportsbook and thinks about one day returning to run a book.

“I’m not doing anything now,” he jokes, while looking at the mob of bettors at the betting windows. “This is work.”

Baccellieri says he does not miss the meetings with bosses after a weekend.

“I don’t miss the second-guessing that occurs,” he says. “But I do miss the business.”

He also misses the bettors, including the celebrity gamblers.

In 2000, ahead of Super Bowl XXXIV between the favored St. Louis Rams and Tennessee Titans, Baccellieri was running the sportsbook at the MGM Grand. Actor Joe Pesci on the property for the ESPYs and was hanging around the book in the days leading up to the Super Bowl. Baccellieri kept pestering Pesci to bet, but the actor didn’t like the point spread sitting at Rams -7. Finally, Baccellieri offered the Pesci a deal. “I told him I’d give him ½ point either say,” Baccellieri recalls. Pesci accepted and took the Titans +7.5. The Rams prevailed 23-16, causing refunds for most customers.

After the game, Baccellieri was visiting with his boss in the baccarat pit, explaining the results. “I was telling him it wasn’t too bad, all things considered,” he says. “Then, Pesci stands up and yells, ‘Richie, you gave me a half a point. I had the only winner!’”

2:45 p.m.: The line to bet at the Wynn is hundreds deep and stretches out into the casino. At the private party in the spacious Lafite Ballroom, hamburgers, brisket sliders, chili with prime rib meat, macaroni and cheese with assorted toppings highlight the buffet. Country-western singer Toby Keith is in attendance. He trips over a plant, but keeps moving.

3:25 p.m: Former President George H.W. Bush flips the coin. It lands on tails, much to the dismay of the bettors, who had combined to risk close to $100,000 on the coin toss. The majority of the action was on heads.

6:40 p.m.: Finally, New England scores its first touchdown late third quarter, only to have kicker Stephen Gostkowski bang the extra point off the right upright. It’s a costly doink for Caesars Palace, which offered a proposition bet on “Will a PAT or field goal hit the goal post?” Despite some early sharp money on “No,” Caesars Palace finished with 89 percent of the bets on “Yes” at +425. “Caesars Palace got crushed on this prop,” Caesars sportsbook director Frank Kunovic puts out on twitter.

7:06 p.m.: New England is mounting its comeback, but still trails 28-20. Because the betting action had been so even on the game, a 31-28 Patriots win, which would result in a push on the side and the over/under total, is the worst-case scenario for books. That score is looking more and more like a possibility. A text message comes in from a bookmaker: “Super Bowls are like four hours of torture. I’d rather be waterboarded.”

7:40 p.m.: The Westgate SuperBook is electric. Screaming Patriots’ fans, having just watched their team complete the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history, are now lining up to cash their bets. The line stretches from the front of the book, down the wall and around the bar in the back. SuperBook vice president Jay Korengay is moving people through quickly, but the line is still hundreds deep two hours after the end of the game.

A mother-daughter combination from Rhode Island is ecstatic. “I parlayed Pats and the over,” says mother Linda Dubois. “I won $720.”

“We had faith in (coach Bill) Belichick and (quarterback) Brady,” adds daughter Deborah Boisclair.

Ralph Vacca of Needham, Massachusetts is one of the first out cashier’s line and is carry $15,000 in cash.

“I was bumming out,” Vacca said, thinking back to the Patriots being down 28-3. “I almost ripped up the ticket, but I said, ‘you know what, you just never know.” Patriots, you never count them out.”

Over at the sportsbook at Santa Fe Station Casino, one patron isn’t quite as thrilled by the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history and hurls a beer bottle, knocking a small hole in the new multi-million-dollar video wall that was just installed last year ahead of the NCAA basketball tournament. Luckily, damage is minimal and easily repaired. In fact, repairs were already underway Monday, according to a company spokesperson.

8 p.m.: The line for a cab outside of the Westgate is 50-people deep. A group of devastated Atlanta Falcons fans decline to comment. People are drunk. “Did you see that dude just walk right out in the street and fall on face?” the cab driver says. “Let’s get out of here.”

9:19 p.m.: The South Point sportsbook still has a crowd, some more welcome than others. An armed robber points a gun at a sportsbook employee and demands money. According to Las Vegas police, the suspect grabs the cash then proceeds to run out into the valet area, where he confronts another casino employee, before being apprehended by security.

10 p.m.: The line to cash winning tickets at the Westgate SuperBook remains 100s deep.

--ESPN staff writer Dave Tuley contributed reporting to this article.

David Purdum

Twitter: @DavidPurdum

Cell: 678-630-5579

Golden Nugget Casino Launches Mobile Sports Wagering

Stratosphere Hotel and Casino Launches Primeline Enterprise Race and Sports Wagering Software

Station Casinos Launches New Race and Sports Book Software in partnership with Stadium Technology Group

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Station Casinos Launches New Race and Sports Book System Solution in partnership with Stadium Technology Group and Miomni Gaming Sports books and mobile app offerings enhanced Las Vegas-July 6, 2016 - Station Casinos together with Stadium Technology Group, a leading provider of race and sports book management software and Miomni Gaming, a multinational technology company, have partnered in the design and development of the next evolution of its sports book betting mobile

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Station Casinos Launches New Race and Sports Book System Solution in partnership with Stadium Technology Group and Miomni Gaming

Sports books and mobile app offerings enhanced

Las Vegas-July 6, 2016 - Station Casinos together with Stadium Technology Group, a leading provider of race and sports book management software and Miomni Gaming, a multinational technology company, have partnered in the design and development of the next evolution of its sports book betting mobile app and enhanced system solution software for the sports books.
